This year's I-Day Luncheon Keynote Speaker is Brenda Wells, Ph.D., CPCU, AAI, CRIS. Dr. Wells is the Director of the Risk Management & Insurance Program at East Carolina University. She is an accomplished writer, speaker, professor and professional in the insurance industry. Dr. Wells has been featured in many publications and continues to research on a variety of subjects and emerging risks. With her wide ranging experiences in the insurance industry, she will share her "Lessons from the Trenches". After lunch, she will focus her discussion on Cannabis and Insurance.

Cannabis and Insurance
Dr. Brenda Wells, Professor and Director, Risk Management & Insurance Program, East Carolina University
The legalization of marijuana is a huge issue for the insurance industry in terms of underwriting, claims and general compliance issues. In this session, Dr. Wells will look at the current legal status of marijuana and how the industry is (and is not) prepared for issues pertaining to cannabis. She will discuss court cases, coverage issues and more emerging issues with the topic.

An Insurance Company Deep Dive on the Opioid Epidemic - Facts, Tips and Strategies
Kevin Bingham, Managing Director, Actuarial, Risk and Analytics, Deloitte Consulting
With approximately 20% of all medical spending going towards prescription drugs, workers' compensation insurers are working very hard to mitigate these costs. This session will provide some background information on the opioid epidemic and discuss the impact the crisis is having on workers' compensation insurers. Discussion topics will include legislative efforts, prescription drug monitoring programs, coordination with pharmacy benefit managers, advanced analytics, drug programs, helpful apps and more.
